One of the best things about a smart ring is that you can keep it on all day. But you wash your hands a dozen times a day, shower, and maybe swim. So can a smart ring handle water? Usually, yes, within limits. Here's what water resistance ratings actually mean.

What does 5ATM mean?

ATM stands for atmospheres, a measure of pressure. A 5ATM rating means the device has been tested to withstand pressure roughly equal to 50 metres of still water. In real life, that does not mean you should take it 50 metres deep. It means it's built for everyday water and swimming at the surface.

What's usually fine with 5ATM

  • Washing hands and doing dishes
  • Showering
  • Rain and sweat
  • Swimming in a pool or the sea at the surface
  • Sweaty workouts

What to avoid

  • Saunas and steam rooms: high heat can damage the battery and seals
  • Hot tubs: heat plus chemicals is a tough combination
  • Scuba diving and high-pressure water sports: pressure changes go beyond what 5ATM covers
  • High-speed water, like jet skiing or diving from a height

Simple care tips

  1. Rinse with fresh water after swimming in chlorine or salt water.
  2. Dry it before putting it on the charger.
  3. Avoid harsh soaps and lotions building up on the inner sensors; wipe them occasionally with a soft cloth.
  4. Don't charge it wet.

Why water resistance matters for tracking

Every time you take a ring off, you risk forgetting to put it back on, and the gaps add up. A ring you can shower, swim and wash up in is a ring that stays on, which means more complete sleep and activity data. See what changes when you wear one constantly in wearing a smart ring every day.

Where Odessa fits

The Odessa Ring is rated 5ATM, so showers, swimming, washing up and sweaty workouts are all fine. Just skip saunas, hot tubs and diving. It's a smooth stainless steel band that lasts 5 to 7 days per charge, so it rarely needs to come off at all.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear my smart ring in the shower?

Yes, with a 5ATM ring like Odessa. Rinse off soap residue now and then.

Can I swim in the sea with a smart ring?

Yes, at the surface. Rinse it with fresh water afterwards.

Can I wear it in a hot tub?

We'd recommend taking it off. The heat and chemicals can damage it.

Is waterproof the same as water resistant?

Not quite. "Water resistant" with a rating like 5ATM is more accurate, as no wearable is completely waterproof in every condition.
